Artist Spotlight: Paint and Curate with Brooke Lancaster

Artist Spotlight: Paint and Curate with Brooke Lancaster

Posted by Della Wheeler on

A little while ago, we got a message from Brooke Lancaster asking if she could gift us one of our gorgeous paintings. After scrolling through her Instagram, we were like, "UH... YES!"

We've been working on redesigning an Airbnb so it was perfect timing. Once you look at her page, you'll see what we saw so clearly: Brooke's paintings are so HAPPY. They are nostalgic in the most perfect way; we can almost smell summer when we look at them.

For a while, we've followed Brooke's journey and her work just keeps getting better. It's safe to say we are obsessed!

Thankfully, we've stayed in touch with Brooke and we got a chance to interview her this week! We think you'll find that her work gives you a chance to hold on to that sweet summer feeling just a little bit longer.

Scroll down to get a taste of her work and the life that inspires it:

We are obsessed with your paintings! What inspired you to become an artist?

Thank you so much! I can’t tell you how much that means to me! I have always had a passion for creating things that bring happiness to others. I can’t tell you how many beaded bracelets, keychains, and faux stained glass pieces I made when I was younger for friends and family.

I have also always associated memories with clothing. I may not be able to tell you the score for the big game but I sure can tell you what I wore. My husband, mom, friends will ask “Hey, do you remember when we went to so and so and did whatever?” It never fails, I answer “Yes! I was wearing this and you were wearing that.” It drives them crazy!

I think that this has been such a huge part of my decision to create and paint clotheslines. Everyone can look at a life vest and feel something or remember something completely different. I find it so fascinating.

Where are you located? How does your hometown inspire your art?

I reside in Savannah, Georgia, on the coast with my husband Jacob, and two children, Stone and Scotland. On top of mostly having warmer weather year round (with the exception of the two months we call winter), we live for the salt water and sun!

90% of the time you can find us on the water, fully clothed in bathing suits, and soaking in all of the family time that we can!

What’s your favorite music to listen to while you paint?

Oh goodness, a little bit of everything! I love hip hop, pop, country music, 80’s and early 90’s.

If it has a good beat, I love it!

We have a feeling your house is super cute! How would you define your home decor style?

This is so funny that you ask this! My home is very colorful! Somewhat coastal, somewhat eclectic. My best friend describes my home as a clean version of the home on the movie Nanny McPhee! You will find lots of colorful, oversized pieces (I’m a big fan of Queen Ann chairs in bright colors) and collectables.

What’s your favorite room in the house right now?

My favorite room in our home right now is actually three! I am loving my foyer, my daughter’s room and my son’s room. Scotland’s room is complete from comforter to cornice in Lilly Pulitzer’s Mermaid Cove pattern. My son, Stone’s room is designed in Pottery Barn Madras print and is complete with coastal brass collectibles and vintage buoy’s!

Give us a glimpse into your perfect day…

Since I truly love my job, my perfect day is a day full of painting and curating patterns for my clotheslines. When I’m not painting, my perfect day would be seemingly what we do every weekend. I love waking up, throwing on our bathing suits and cover ups, heading out to Hilton Head in the boat for some yummy lunch and drinks at The Salty Dog Cafe, and heading to Shark Tooth Island to hunt for shark teeth and treasure with my kids. There is no better feeling than coming home from a day out on the water, slightly sunburnt, hopping in a shower to get rid of the sand and cuddling exhausted babies.

Who is your favorite person or brand to follow on social media at the moment?

Stray Dog Designs, of course! I am completely obsessed with your designs! If

I had to choose another, it would be Kristie McGowan Home. She is so kind and her home is just beautiful! She has such wonderful, different taste and is not afraid of color. I love her feed!

What’s in the rotation for you right now (books, podcasts, movies, shows)?

I have actually just finished re-reading the Outlander book series. I do have my weekly line-up of podcasts including How’d She Do That, Crime Junkie, The Messy Studio, and Anatomy of Murder. I like variety! One show that I have been binging and will be so sad waiting on the next season is The Time Traveler’s Wife. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the movie so you can imagine my excitement when the show aired!
