Turn and Face the Strange... Ch-changes

Turn and Face the Strange... Ch-changes

Posted by Della Wheeler on

We are heartbroken to share the death of our beloved Mamie, a particularly lovely and cherished stray Dane(ish). Born into a tough life on the streets of New Orleans, Mamie was rescued from under an abandoned house in the 9th Ward in early 2014 and quickly became a treasured member of our family. On Saturday morning, after a courageous battle with blood cancer, she crossed the rainbow bridge.

Mamie will be remembered for her bounding gait, striking blue eyes, playful spirit, and uncanny communication skills—not to mention her wildly eclectic (and occasionally questionable) culinary preferences. We will miss her dearly. This loss is especially poignant, as it marks the first time in 30 years that Billy and I will be without a stray dog.

Saturday also brought another blow—one that, while not unexpected, is deeply distressing. The implementation of the president’s promised punitive tariffs on Canada and Mexico will have a significant impact on our business, our livelihood, and our hardworking, hospitable team in our beloved San Miguel de Allende.

While we are gravely concerned about what lies ahead, we remain committed to weathering this storm, keeping our artisans employed, and ensuring our customers continue to receive the pieces they love. Though the cost of our goods has increased by 25%, we will not raise our prices—at least not yet. We don't know how long we can sustain this, but for now, we will absorb the hit and do our best to carry on. To help cut costs, we will immediately suspend social media and online advertising, so if you feel inclined to spread the word about us, we would be endlessly grateful. 😉

It would be easy to let the weight of Saturday's events pull us down, but we refuse to sink. We will keep our heads up and navigate this uncertainty with as much resilience as we can muster. Most of all, we want you to know how much we love and appreciate you—our customers, our small business community, our family, friends, neighbors, our country, and, of course, our dogs.

P.S. As of this morning, the Mexican tariffs have been postponed for a month, and I spotted two jonquils blooming in my yard. A reminder that even in the toughest moments, hope still finds a way.
