Eco-Friendly Decorating: Papier Mache Light Fixtures for Sustainable Homes

Posted by Corinne Beckinger on

We believe function and art can go hand in hand here at Stray Dog Designs, and our stunning papier mache lighting options are perfect solutions for interior designers and home decorators looking to add sustainable, modern décor to a home. Ethically sourced and handmade by skilled artisans in the village of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, our papier mache lamps are functional, eco-friendly art pieces. Inspired by the natural beauty of the world around us, our stunning papier mache lighting pairs form and function with a dash of whimsy to add beauty and character that’s perfect for any home, style, or budget.

What is papier mache?

At its core, papier mache pieces are sustainable art works. All our papier mache pieces are made from repurposed recycled paper, allowing our artists to produce beautiful papier mache sculptures. Stray Dog Designs artists use a traditional papier mache crafting technique to layer the recycled paper onto a mold or around an iron frame using water and a paste of wheat flour mixed with a little glue. Once it has reached its desired thickness, the sculpture is left to dry before it is carefully sanded and painted with an eco-friendly Benjamin Moore paint, transforming it into a unique papier mache art piece.

Is it paper mache or papier mache?

We’ll get right to the point and tell you now, technically, neither term is incorrect! While “paper mache” is the more common phrase, it is derived from the French term “papier mache.” We like to use the traditional term as a nod to the artform and the family of artists that handcraft our pieces.

The Stray Dog Designs difference

Steeped in tradition with a technique that has been handed down from one generation to the next, our papier mache décor has been handcrafted for more than 32 years by the Villafranco Peralta family in Mexico. Our lamps and light fixtures are handmade with the highest quality materials, ensuring no two pieces are exactly alike.

Brighten up a gray room with the papier mache John O Ceiling Light. Inspired by seaweed as it gracefully waves along the ocean floor, the Chucho Chandelier is a perfect addition for an elegant home. And, add light and laughter to your home with the funky Crunchberry Table Lamp or adorable Strawberry Table Lamp.
